Michael Jerdev: Bi-allelic variants in the ESAM tight-junction gene cause a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with fetal intracranial hemorrhage (Am J Hum Genet . )
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an essential gatekeeper for the central nervous system and incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) is higher in infants with a history of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We discovered a rare disease trait in thirteen individuals, including four fetuses, from eight unrelated families associated with homozygous loss-of-function variant alleles of ESAM which encodes an endothelial cell adhesion molecule.
Tomer Meirson: Assessment of Median and Mean Survival Time in Cancer Clinical Trials (JAMA Netw Open .)
This cohort study assesses the relative stability of median and mean survival time estimates reported in cancer clinical trials.
Hadas Shasha-Lavsky: "AN UNFINISHED SYMPHONY": MEDICINE DURING THE WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING (Harefuah .)
This year marks the anniversary of the 80th year of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (1943 -2023), a very important and significant turning point in the history of the Holocaust. The Uprising is not the only demonstration of courage and strength, in rebelling against the brutal Nazi oppressor: there was another form of intellectual and spiritual resistance in the ghetto - medical resistance. Physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals resisted. Not only did they provide very diverse and dedicated medical assistance to the ghetto residents, but they went beyond their professional duties in initiating research on Hunger Diseases and in founding a clandestine medical school. The medical work in the Warsaw Ghetto is a symbol of the victory of the human spirit.
Jacob Bornstein: Consensus Statement on the Management of Vaginal Intraepithelial Neoplasia (J Low Genit Tract Dis . )
Full name of article: The European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD), the European College for the Study of Vulval Disease (ECSVD), and the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC) Consensus Statement on the Management of Vaginal Intraepithelial Neoplasia
The European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD), the European College for the Study of Vulval Disease (ECSVD), and the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC) developed consensus statements on pre-invasive vulvar lesions in order to improve the quality of care for patients with vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN).
Adnan Zaina: How to position sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors in the management of diabetes in acromegaly patients (Endocrine .)
Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents one of the most common metabolic comorbidities and is present in 30% to 40% of patients with acromegaly. This rate is expected to increase further along with the prevalence of DM Patients with acromegaly develop insulin resistance due to excess growth hormone (GH), and insulin insufficiency may occur in those with longstanding disease. Moreover, second-generation somatostatin receptor ligands (SRLs) also contribute to the increased development of new-onset diabetes and worsening hyperglycemia. Worthy of mentioning that patients with acromegaly are at increased risk for cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and the coexistence of diabetes might even worsen these conditions.
Offer Amir, Shemy Carasso: Outcomes of Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients Who Presented with Cardiogenic Shock versus Patients Who Developed Cardiogenic Shock during Hospitalization (J Clin Med . )
Cardiogenic shock (CS) continues to be a severe and fatal complication of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). CS patients have a high mortality rate despite significant progress in primary reperfusion, the management of heart failure and the expansion of mechanical circulatory support strategies. The present study addressed the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of ACS patients complicated with CS.
Boris Fichtman, Amnon Harel: The Effect of Outer Space and Other Environmental Cues on Bacterial Conjugation (Microbiol Spectr .)
Bacterial conjugation is one of the most abundant horizontal gene transfer (HGT) mechanisms, playing a fundamental role in prokaryote evolution. A better understanding of bacterial conjugation and its cross talk with the environment is needed for a more complete understanding of HGT mechanisms and to fight the dissemination of malicious genes between bacteria. Here, we studied the effect of outer space, microgravity, and additional key environmental cues on transfer (tra) gene expression and conjugation efficiency, using the under studied broad-host range plasmid pN3, as a model.
Enav Yefet, Liron Bar, Johnny S Younis: Effects of Probiotics on Glycemic Control and Metabolic Parameters in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (Nutrients .)
Objectives: To assess the effects of probiotic supplements on glycemic control and metabolic parameters in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. The primary outcome was glycemic control, i.e., serum glucose and insulin levels. Secondary outcomes were maternal weight gain, neonatal birth weight, and lipid parameters. Weighted mean difference (WMD) was used. Cochrane's Q test of heterogeneity and I2 were used to assess heterogeneity.
Samih Badarny, Amal Abu Ayash, Galina Keigler: Vagal Nerve Activity and Short-Term Clinical Outcomes after Stroke: What Is Left May Not Be Right (J Clin Med .)
Stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide. Multiple factors influence the severity of stroke. Normal functional and biological differences seen between the hemispheres may also be related to stroke severity. In the present study, we examined the differences in the severity of stroke as a function of stroke side, and whether patients' vagal nerve activity moderated such differences.
Ala Aiob, Raneen Abu Shqara, Susana Mustafa Mikhail, Avishalom Sharon, Marwan Odeh, Lior Lowenstein: Alternative beta-hCG follow-up protocols after single-dose methotrexate therapy for ectopic pregnancy: A retrospective cohort study (Eur J Obstet Gynecol
This study assessed the relevance of reductions in beta-hCG levels between days 0 and 4 and between days 0 and 7 after single-dose methotrexate therapy, and the success of the therapy.
Tzipora C Falik-Zaccai, Hanna Mandel: Hereditary orotic aciduria identified by newborn screening (Front Genet .)
Hereditary orotic aciduria is an extremely rare, autosomal recessive disease caused by deficiency of uridine monophosphate synthase. Untreated, affected individuals may develop refractory megaloblastic anemia, neurodevelopmental disabilities, and crystalluria. Newborn screening has the potential to identify and enable treatment of affected individuals before they become significantly ill.
Sivan Spitzer: Opportunities for psychologists to advance health equity: Using liberation psychology to identify key lessons from 17 years of praxis (Am Psychol . )
Health and health care inequities persist because the efforts to eliminate them have ignored structural racism, typically using a power neutral approach to diagnose and solve the problem. Critical theory can address many of the conceptual weaknesses of current approaches, help identify how racism operates in health care, and open the door for more effective individual employee and organizational actions to advance health equity. We apply Martín-Baró's (1996) liberation psychology to lessons we learned through implementing a transdisciplinary national health and health care equity program.
Hanna Keren: A highly replicable decline in mood during rest and simple tasks (Nat Hum Behav .)
Does our mood change as time passes? This question is central to behavioural and affective science, yet it remains largely unexamined. To investigate, we intermixed subjective momentary mood ratings into repetitive psychology paradigms.

Arnon Blum: Gender differences in vascular ageing and in coronary artery disease pathophysiology (QJM .)
Women have a clinical advantage over men in relation with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease [CVD] (morbidity and mortality). This advantage disappears once women become older, and on their 7th decade the risk to develop CVD equals men at that age. There have been several theories about this gender difference that were related to hormones, and the different morphology and physiology that characterize the cardiovascular system in women. In this review the different mechanisms will be reviewed and discussed.
