Graduate degree in health sciences - making an impact on individuals and the masses

The graduate degree program in the health sciences is intended for professional in a wide range of fields - the social sciences, brain sciences, stem engineering, exact sciences, mathematics, and health professions - and allows them to complete a master's degree that suits their training and field of occupation.

A graduate degree (MSc, PhD) in health sciences will provide you with the tools to explore and understand human health in a holistic view: mechanisms, processes and consequences.

The degree allows students to engage in various realms of research: laboratory research, epidemiological research and research in clinics, hospitals and the community. As part of the degree, the students will benefit from collaboration with clinics, health funds and medical centers.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to the program, the first step is to choose an advisor.

GPA of at least 80 in B.Sc. studies from a recognized academic institution. 

OR

GPA of at least 85 in M.Sc. studies (incl thesis) from a recognized academic institution.

Curriculum

Master's degree studies begin at the beginning of the first semester of the academic year and oblige the student to devote considerable time to his/her research topic,  above and beyond the research itself and the coursework.

The student must complete all studies, including coursework, research, and thesis writing - within two years.

A master's degree with thesis requires a full time commitment, and can be done parallel to other work.

The master's degree can take place in the Faculty in other fields as well. The full list of fields can be found on the researchers' websites.

Courses

All students are required to take a cluster of courses totaling 12 hours (annual hours) depending on the nature of the major. In every major, every student must take the following courses:

Compulsory courses for all majors:

Course No. 81-900 - "New horizons in molecular and cellular biology", semester course - 1 hr.

Course No. 81-901- "Research methods and the principles of using scientific equipment and technology", annual course - 2 hr.

Course No. 81-933-01, Scientific Writing - 1 hr.

Course No. 81-927-01, Ethical Issues in Scientific Research - 1 hr.

From the cluster of courses in each major, two seminars are compulsory, each worth 0.5 hours, as well as about 6 elective courses (6 hours) in each major.

Student may choose up to 2 elective courses (2 credits) from another major.

In addition, students must take basic courses (4 hours) - for those who have not previously studied at Bar-Ilan University.

The courses for master's degree students within the majors are taken according to the direction of the supervisors in the areas of specialization of the students in the research work, from the list of graduate courses.

The students are also required to listen to the "faculty colloquium" (lectures on research topics).

Thesis

  • At the end of the first year, the student will submit to the faculty committee for research students, a proposal for a plan for the research work after it has been approved by the supervisor.
  • After the proposal is approved by the faculty committee, it will be submitted to the university committee for research students for final approval.
  • After the research is finished and after the supervisor's approval, the written thesis will be submitted to the faculty committee for research students for the purpose of determining examiners and a test date.
  • The examination committee will include 2 examiners and a supervisor. The students will present the main points of their findings in a presentation and answer the examiners' questions.
