How can pediatric medicine be taught in a way that is up-to-date, meaningful, and connected to clinical practice? This question was at the center of a recent roundtable meeting held at the Faculty of Medicine, as part of a broader process to refresh and redesign teaching in the Department of Pediatrics.

The meeting brought together physicians from pediatric departments in hospitals, representatives of community pediatrics, Faculty leadership, and the Medical Education Unit. The meeting marked the culmination of a collaborative process in which several teams discussed ways to strengthen students’ learning experience, with a focus on clinical rotations, community-based teaching, student assessment, and the development of digital resources.

The working groups presented insights and recommendations developed throughout the process, and the discussions reflected a shared commitment to high-quality, consistent, and relevant education — teaching that connects up-to-date medical knowledge, clinical thinking, and hands-on experience with children and families.

Beyond the professional work, the meeting strengthened connections among members of the Department and created a foundation for future collaborations. Following the meeting, dedicated working teams were established to continue leading the implementation of the agreed changes. At the same time, an academic enrichment program for teaching faculty was developed, including study days at various hospitals, to create a network of collaboration in clinical practice, teaching, and research.

How can pediatric medicine be taught in a way that is current, meaningful, and connected to real-world clinical practice? A recent roundtable meeting held by the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine addressed this question as part of an ongoing process to refresh and redesign teaching in the department.
