Leading Change in Medical Education: The Faculty’s Educational Leadership Program Begins
How do we prepare senior physicians to lead change in medical education? And how do we turn ideas for improving clinical teaching into initiatives that can be implemented in departments and hospitals?
On October 5, the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine launched its Medical Education and Leadership Program for Senior Physicians (HERUV), the Faculty’s flagship program in medical education. The program is designed to equip physician-educators with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to lead high-quality clinical teaching and educational initiatives in their own workplaces.
What makes the program unique is its practical, project-based approach. Participants identify a challenge or need in teaching and learning within their clinical environment and develop a real-world initiative to address it.
The opening session included a workshop led by Prof. Peter Gilby on systematic educational program design using Kern’s six-step approach and tools for identifying educational needs. Dr. Anat Eini led a session on the clinical reasoning skills students develop throughout their medical training and how these skills evolve across the curriculum.
Throughout the program, participants explore key topics in medical education, including teaching methods, assessment and feedback, leadership, and change management. At the same time, they work on their individual projects, moving from identifying goals and designing educational interventions to creating implementation plans and measures for success.
A central component of the program is personalized mentorship. Each participant team is paired with an experienced mentor who provides guidance, feedback, and support in turning ideas into practical initiatives. Together with peer learning, this mentorship helps participants develop projects that are closely connected to the realities of clinical practice.
The program combines in-person sessions, practical workshops, and online learning and mentoring meetings. It will conclude in January 2027 with a final presentation event, where participants will share the educational initiatives they have developed and their implementation plans.
The program is led by the Faculty’s Medical Education team: Prof. Ayelet Arbel-Eden, Dr. Liran Giladi, and Dr. Anat Eini.
The Faculty’s flagship medical education program, HERUV, has launched a new cohort of senior physicians, combining leadership training, educational innovation, and hands-on projects designed to improve clinical teaching across the region.
