Teaching Beyond Knowledge: Active Learning and AI Tools in Medical Education

How can a medical class be transformed from a session where the instructor speaks and learners listen into a learning environment where learners think, discuss, collaborate, and apply knowledge?

In a workshop led by Prof. Ayelet Arbel-Eden, Head of the Medical Education Unit, for instructors in Clalit North District's Family Medicine residency and student training programs, participants explored the ongoing changes in medical education and their implications for the evolving role of the medical educator.

During the workshop, participants learned and practiced the principles of Thinking-Based Learning (TBL). Using the digital collaboration platform Padlet, they experienced how group thinking and discussion processes can be made visible and shared. They also practiced the Think-Pair-Share method, which encourages learners to first reflect independently, then discuss their ideas with a peer, and finally share insights with the larger group.

Another part of the workshop focused on the use of artificial intelligence tools in teaching. Participants were introduced to NotebookLM, which enables educators to work with selected information sources and generate podcasts, quizzes, infographics, and other educational materials. The workshop also demonstrated how ChatGPT can serve as a pedagogical teaching assistant for lesson planning, question design, and assessment rubric development, while emphasizing the importance of professional judgment and the educator's central role in guiding the learning process.

The workshop was attended by 22 clinical instructors in Family Medicine, including both experienced and newly appointed educators. Participants were highly engaged throughout the session and expressed interest in further exploring the tools presented and incorporating them into their teaching and mentoring activities.

The key takeaway was clear: even small changes in teaching practice can transform passive learners into active participants in the process of thinking and learning. At the same time, the thoughtful integration of AI tools can enrich instruction, foster creativity, and streamline preparation, without compromising the educator's professional judgment and expertise.
